Barcelona & Mallorca: a homage to catalonia

April 17th-26th, 2018 | Maximum Group Size: 15 Participants | Availability: Open

We begin in Barcelona, the capital of Catalonia, and Spain’s most visually striking city. As Rose Macaulay wrote sixty years ago, in The Fabled Shore, “…it gives an impression of tempestuous, surging, irrepressible life and brio.” It remains true today. We’ll spend our days exploring the Barri Gotic, the very heart of Barcelona, her outstanding museums and architecture, and take an excursion up the Costa Brava in search of Salvador Dali. Finally, a 4-night stay on the Mediterranean island of Mallorca concludes the trip with a welcome change of pace as we explore hidden villages and monasteries, winding lanes and quiet corners. From the mountains of the northwest to the fertile central plain, there is an abundance of historical and artistic treasure to occupy the discerning visitor. And of course, beautiful beaches that have made the island a haven for European tourists seeking the summer sun.

A Pilgrim's Way: Following the camino de santiago from bilbao to santiago de compostela

May 3rd-12th, 2018 | Maximum Group Size: 15 Participants | Availability: Open

Join Discover Europe’s Gavin Miller and explore the ancient route of the Camino de Santiago in northwest Spain. Also known as The Pilgrim’s Way or Way of St. James, it has been travelled a foot by those seeking redemption since AD 1085. Starting in Bilboa where we will go to the stunning Guggenheim Museum designed by Frank Gehry; we will stay in hotels right along the path to get an idea of what life is like walking the Camino. With visits to the beautiful stained glass cathedral in Leon, Gaudi’s The Bishop’s Palace, and Cebreiro, a traditional Galician mountain settlement with pallozas (thatched houses), we will wind our way to Santiago where present day pilgrims celebrate the end to their 500 mile journey, with swollen feet and big smiles.

Mediterranean Shores

October 11th-20th, 2018 | Maximum Group Size: 15 Participants | Availability: Open

Nothing in the world conjures up more romantic and beautiful images than the Mediterranean. Azure waters, white sands, mountain villages, and year-round sunshine combine to create a mood of tranquility and contentment that is truly irresistible. Discover Europe’s veteran courier Gavin Miller has designed a tour that explores the areas in Spain and France that he particularly loves and has come to call home. We begin in Barcelona, which, as Rose Macaulay wrote four decades ago, “gives an impression of tempestuous, surging, irrepressible life and brio.” Then, we cross the Spanish/French border, stopping at the ancient walled city of Carcassonne en route, and on into Provence, a region that intoxicates with its light and landscapes. From our base in Arles we explore the grandeur of the Roman Empire. Ancient hilltop villages beckon to be explored and a day in Avignon allows us to dance sur le pont! Our final stay is in elegant Nice, jewel of the Cote d’Azur, a city whose greatest charm is itself: the avenues, squares, markets, shops, and cafes that create an unforgettable buzz of sophistication and excitement.
