Join Discover Europe for an English Countryside adventure exploring its treasures, literature, and landscape.

Stone circle at Castlerigg

You’ll visit charming Hill Top, the house Beatrix Potter specifically left for us (via the National Trust), and then find yourself looking for bunnies in blue jackets in her garden. You’ll be inspired by the William Morris wallpaper on the ceiling of her cottage, her hat and shoes still sitting by the fire, and led windows with the same views she saw.

After your boat ride on gorgeous Lake Windermere and a visit to Dove Cottage, with its funny nooks and charming crannies, you’ll understand why Miss Potter, William Wordsworth (Poet Laureate for Queen Victoria), and other Lakeland artists, writers, and poets decided to make this beautiful, inspiring place their home. You’ll have afternoon tea in Faeryland! Lunch at Tower Bank Arms! (Exclamation points are well-earned!) You’ll see a magical stone circle at Castlerigg, and even learn a wee bit of “Viking” language!

Fountains Abbey

You’ll be treated to a day of meanderment (meandering wonderment) as you drive across the Yorkshire Dales, hard to capture in mere words. But if you walked out there in 1756 and came back now, I don’t think you’d see any difference—remote stone farmhouses cling to hillsides in this wild and ancient landscape filled with drifting wildflowers and small narrow-lane villages. Then on to the historic walled city of York with its storybook medieval streets and stunning York Minster, the massive cathedral begun in 1220 and finished in 1472. A dream come true. Memories galore.

Read on, and get the details because there is so much more!
